Homemade Fizzing Bath Balms

Now that the holidays are done it is the perfect time to make a present just for yourself! Now these take a lot of practice and you have to follow the instructions perfectly or you will end up with lots and lots of bath balms that you must be used right then because the citiric acid has started to fizz. It took me 5 batches to figure out how these are made and I learned to make then close to bath time so they could just be thrown into the bath water. The real trick with these is patience.

To mold your bath balms you need a container to put them in. I bought some larger silicone heart molds and they worked great. I like the bigger molds for adults. You can buy smaller candy molds and these work great for kids! They are much smaller so they each can add 2 or 3 to the bath so and watch their own balm fizz away. My girls love it!

Dry ingredients:

4oz baking soda

2oz corn starch

2oz epson salts

2oz citric acid (can be bought at health food stores)

Wet ingredients:

1.5-2 tbsp water

14-16 drops essential oils

Optional: 10-14 drops food coloring

Gather all of your dry ingredients and all of your wet ingredients in Two Separate Bowls. This is very important.

Then using a glass dropper add one drop of the liquid at a time. This is key! One drop at a time. One batch takes 20-30 min and can not be rushed or you end up with fizzing mess.

With each drop it is going to fizz. Just quickly stop the reaction by covering the drop with the rest of the dry ingredients. Just keep stirring with every drop you add. Soon it is going to become the texture of wet sand. That is what we want.

Once we have added all of the liquid then just pack into your desired mould. Pack them like you would brown sugar. The tighter the better.

Once they are in the mould then you leave them for 12-18 hours to let dry. After that carefully tip the mould over and push them out of the mould. Leave them to dry for another 12 hours. Then just keep them dry until you are ready for a bath! Each batch makes 3 large bath balms. Enjoy!
